Electric Two-Wheeled Loader - Technotrade

Electric Two-Wheeled Loader

Completion 2025
Electric drives

The QuiMo WL1600 two-wheeled loader, for which we designed and supplied the electric drive system, represents an entirely new category of multi-purpose machinery. It combines the agility of robotic platforms, the power of a classic wheel loader, and the versatility of a forklift. At first glance, it captivates with its unique two-wheeled architecture.

This new machine from the German tech startup QuiMo GmbH shatters conventional myths about what a loader should look like. You won't find a classic articulated chassis or a traditional hydrostatic drive here. Instead, it relies on a revolutionary two-wheeled concept built on a robotic platform. At Technotrade, we have been part of this visionary project from its very inception as a technology partner and supplier of the complete electric drive system.

The design of the QuiMo loader (short for Quick Motion) utilizes the principle of dynamic stability instead of static weight. While conventional loaders require massive cast-iron counterweights to prevent tipping, the QuiMo utilizes intelligent center-of-gravity shifting, where the traction battery system itself acts as a dynamic counterweight.

The result is an incredible power-to-weight ratio: the machine weighs just 1.8 tons but can lift loads up to 1.6 tons (with testing during the proof-of-concept phase confirming a load capacity potential of up to 1.8 tons) to a height of 2 800 mm. Thanks to the absence of heavy static mass, the machine exhibits up to 40% lower energy consumption compared to conventional electric loaders.

Radical simplification and 360° maneuverability

Standard machines of this size rely on articulated steering and complex mechanical linkages. QuiMo takes the path of radical simplification. It can turn 360 degrees literally on the spot, making it the ideal assistant for confined spaces, warehouses, or indoor demolition sites where zero emissions are essential.

The machine is operated exclusively via remote control, significantly increasing operator safety. Supported by surrounding-area sensor technology, the operator can control the machine from alongside the unit, ensuring excellent visibility of the working environment while further enhancing operational safety.

Due to the simplified machine architecture, up to 7 out of 10 standard service tasks required by conventional loaders are eliminated. No shock absorbers, no steering joints, and a absolute minimum of moving parts subject to wear and tear.

Our role: technology consultant and drive system integrator

To realize such an ambitious concept, it was crucial to abandon traditional hydraulic (hydrostatic) travel systems and design a purely electric solution with extremely precise responsiveness and coordination of both independent wheels.

We joined the project right at the concept development stage, acting not merely as a component supplier, but primarily as a strategic technical advisor. We co-created the machine's drive concept and participated in optimizing key design details that enabled ideal load distribution and smooth integration of the drive system into a very compact chassis.

Components we supplied for the QuiMo:

  • Drive unit: The drivetrain consists of a highly efficient electric motor coupled with a durable gearbox, representing a custom-tailored solution developed specifically for this machine. In terms of dimensions, the drive unit is exceptionally compact and features a short length, which was essential for integration into the machine’s tight chassis. The drive system also includes an electromagnetic brake to ensure maximum safety and reliability.
  • Motor controllers (including parameterization): An essential part of the electric drive system is the motor controllers (frequency inverters) that regulate the electric motor’s speed. Through their detailed parameterization and software tuning, we achieved seamless synchronization, instant response to remote control commands, and efficient energy recuperation during braking.
  • Working hydraulics drive: We equipped the system with a separate, dedicated electric motor designed to drive the hydraulic pump for the lift arm and universal attachment carrier. This ensures that working functions do not affect the travel dynamics.

From successful concept to series production

The first functional prototype successfully completed the demanding proof-of-concept phase and generated a significant wave of interest at the international Bauma trade fair. It proved that this revolutionary idea of a two-wheeled robotic loader works exceptionally well in practice.

Currently, the project is moving into its next key phase. Based on the data collected from testing, the manufacturer is currently preparing a second prototype, which will already be certified for direct deployment in real-world operations. The ultimate goal of the entire development process is to transition into standard series production as quickly as possible.

At Technotrade, we are proud that our drives and engineering know-how are helping to define a whole new era of smart, safe, and emission-free working machinery.
